Checklist to Follow After a Car Accident

Panama City Car Accident Attorney

All can become a blur in the immediate aftermath of a car accident. It can be easy to forget simple steps to take and information that needs to be obtained. That is why we have put together a simple checklist for your convenience that you can follow after a vehicular accident. By having defined steps on a written document, it should help you think more clearly despite any shock or stress you feel from the collision.

We recommend that you print this out and keep it in your glove box so that it is easily accessible:

  • Remember to stop - First and foremost, you must stop your vehicle immediately after the collision, especially if cars were damaged, anyone was injured or people were killed. It is the law.
  • Seek medical assistance - Obtain the appropriate medical help for anyone who may be hurt. Even if people appear to be fine, including you, it is still a wise idea to have a knowledgeable medical professional double check for any internal injuries.
  • Make the area safe - Do not abandon safety precautions. Set up flares, cones or anything that can help to deter other drivers from running into the scene of the accident.
  • Notify the police - Contact the Highway Patrol (850-872-4150), City Police (850-872-3100) or County Sheriff (850-747-4700). You can also call 911.
  • Refrain from making comments - Avoid talking about the accident to anyone else involved or witnesses. Answer the questions the police will have, but just state the facts and do not admit any fault.
  • Exchange information - Provide the other driver(s) with your full name, address, phone number, vehicle registration number, driver's license number and insurance information. Be sure to obtain the same from the other driver(s) as well.
  • Get information from witnesses - Obtain the full name, phone numbers, addresses, email addresses and any additional comments from surrounding witnesses.
  • Write down notes - It is easy to forget what happened after an accident, which is why we recommend that you take your own written notes on the situation. It will help you recall the facts later on.
  • Do not leave right away - Wait until the police officer tells you it is alright to go before you take off. The only exception to this is if you or the person you were with has to leave the scene for medical reasons.
